What is a Chromebook?

Is it necessary to check out a Chromebook or can students use a personal device?
The Chromebook is the required 1:1 device at this time. It will allow us to facilitate student use and provide all students with course related applications.  

What exactly will my student receive?
Each K-8 student will be assigned a Chromebook along with an AC charger. It is expected that all middle school students bring Chromebooks fully charged along with the AC adapter to school each day. Devices should be charged using the provided charger only.

The Chromebook comes equipped with audio and video recording capabilities through a built-in microphone and camera. All electronic recordings created with the device must comply with District Policies and State and Federal Laws. District policy prohibits the use of electronic recording devices in a manner that compromises the privacy interests of other individuals. District policy also prohibits harassment and bullying (see Family Handbook). Users of the Chromebook devices are required to use the device in a manner that complies with these and other District Policies. Use of the Chromebook in a manner that violates District policy may result in revocation of the device and may result in further disciplinary consequence.

Use of the Chromebook and any other devices with audio and video recording capabilities during instructional time is at the discretion of the teacher and the student must obtain prior approval to use the device for such purposes. Any electronic recordings obtained with the recording device are for instructional/educational purposes and individual use. Therefore, electronic recordings obtained with the Chromebook may not be shared, published or re-broadcasted for any reason by the student without permission. Furthermore, users of the Chromebook should be aware that State and Federal laws in many instances prohibit secret or surreptitious recording undertaken without the knowledge and consent of the person or persons being recorded. Violations of State and Federal recording laws may be reported to the proper authorities and may result in criminal prosecution.

In accordance with the Child Internet Protection Act, all Tempe Elementary Schools Chromebooks are filtered, blocking access to inappropriate online content whether the device is at school or at home. This cloud-based filter overrides any filtering you may have at home when students use a district-issued device.

Use of the Chromebook is always within the teacher’s discretion and how it fits into the instructional design each day. There may be class periods when the Chromebook is used constantly and other periods where it may not be used at all.

Students will be taught and should be knowledgeable of basic device troubleshooting. Students with device problems beyond basic troubleshooting should be referred to the Technology Support Assistant (TSA) for their school.

Occasionally, a student may need to drop off the device in exchange for a loaner during the day, but since all work should be saved to Google Drive, there is virtually no disruption to accessing work.

Absolutely. This can be done through the WiFi settings found through the Settings menu in the bottom right corner of the Chromebook. 

Yes, families can purchase a protective case that fits an HP Chromebook 11.  This is optional.

Chromebooks are filtered in accordance with the Child Internet Protection Act. 

There are many solutions that families can use to monitor, limit, or filter a home WiFi network. It is important to note that home filtering solutions could possibly interfere with online resources needed for coursework.  Open DNS and Disney Circle are two common solutions.

Yes, families have the opportunity to purchase their child's Chromebook for a highly reduced rate after completing 8th grade.

Communication regarding this opportunity will be sent to eligible students in the Spring of each school year.
